Although shy people and those with low self esteem often wish that their social performance was better, they don't know effective ways to improve their social skills.

I am familiar with this problem because I used to be terribly shy and have really low self esteem in the past. That is why I spent many years learning to overcome these problems.

One of the biggest problems that many shy people have, as well as those with poor self esteem is that in their minds they are harshly criticizing every aspect of everything they say.

Here is an example of the kind of inner dialogue that might be going on in the mind of a shy person or a person with low self esteem, while they are also trying to have a conversation with somebody else.

Gee, you're such a dolt. Everything you say is stupid. Why can't you do anything right. How do you expect to make any friends when everything you say is so stupid! Why can't you act confident when you are in front of other people? What's wrong with you? Why can't you think up anything better to say?

What's the problem with this kind of inner self criticism? The main problem is that it doesn't work. It doesn't improve anything. It is a very personal attack that shames the person who has to listen to it, and it doesn't offer any practical solutions to follow that could improve conversation performance.

Harsh criticism doesn't work as a way of improving conversation performance or conversation confidence. In fact, such criticism is often so debilitating that making conversation with someone else becomes impossible.

It can take time to retrain your mind to stop criticizing your conversations and start focusing on positive and practical ways to improve your conversation performance.

One way to short circuit the constant criticism in your mind is to tell yourself that your conversations are simply practice exercises and therefore they don't really count.

No matter what happens in a conversation, treat yourself kindly. If you have an attack of shyness or anxiety, don't put yourself down because of it. If you say something that is a bit silly, laugh it off and vow to do better next time.

Don't insist on being perfect in every single aspect of your behaviour.

5 Things a Call Answering Service Should Avoid Saying

There are a few phrases that if banished, will instantly make your phone manner a lot more appealing. Here are five sentences that you may have seen receptionists use on T.V. but are better left unsaid in the real world:
1. "I'm not sure" or "I don't know." Callers don't expect you to be omniscient; they realize you may be the receptionist, virtual receptionist, or simply need to do some research to find the answer to their question. However, saying, "I don't know" immediately puts a negative spin on your answer. So, skip to the good stuff and offer to put your caller in touch with someone who does know:
"Good question! Let me see if Kim in our support department is available to discuss that with you."
"That's a great question! The owner would be the best person to speak with about that. Let me put you in touch with him."
2. "She's on the other line at the moment." You don't need to be a remote receptionist to see how this could lead to trouble. Even if you're in the same office and can see the person on the other line, saying that they're on the phone sets up unrealistic expectations. They may expect a return call as soon as she's off the phone, but she could be stepping into a meeting, returning another call, or the call just may last for another hour. You never know! Another potential hitch: Your caller may ask to hold until the other party is available. If you're not sure when she'll be available, or if you work at a live call answering service and need to be available for other calls yourself, things can get tricky.
3. "I can't do that." This may be the most hated phrase in all of customer service-dom. Ever call your cable provider and have the rep reply with "I'm sorry, sir/ma'am, I can't do that"? Caller: I'd like to re-draft my will. Are you able to help me with that?
Receptionist: "I can't. I'll transfer you to the attorney."
Take out the "I can't" and put the friendliness back into your reply:
Receptionist: "Let me put you in touch with the attorney. He'd be happy to chat with you about making changes to your will. One moment, please."
4. "Just a sec." A tad informal and a tad misleading (what takes only a second?), "Just a sec" shouldn't be in your vocabulary. Go for the more sophisticated "One moment please" and your professionalism won't waver for an instant!
5. "Hold, please." You'll need to place callers on hold from time to time to look up information, try someone's line, or answer a (quick) call. Asking instead of telling will make your caller feel important. Try asking for permission with a "May I place you on hold for a moment?" Your caller will most likely say yes since they feel taken care of, but if they decline, either acquiesce or offer an explanation and an alternative. "I need to look that up in our database, which may take a few minutes. Would it be alright if I gave you a call back when I've found the answer?" Being respectful of your caller's time is always the right thing!

Here's my informal definition of a real estate search engine: "Any website that allows consumers to search for real estate listings." I think that's a basic definition we can all agree upon. This is probably the most popular real estate search engine, just because it has been around the longest. When you land on the home page of, you're offered a variety of real estate-related information. But the primary element on their home page is, of course, their real estate search engine.

To begin, you simply enter a city and state, provide some qualifying information like price range and number of rooms, and then click "Go." Once you get to the actual home listings, you can sort them by price, number of rooms, etc.

One thing I've always liked about is the way the results are presented. You can view 10 homes per page, with thumbnail photo and basic information. This lets you "eyeball" shop and weed out any homes that don't interest you right off the bat. That way, you only have to click the "learn more" link for homes that you've screened first. A lot of the newer real estate search engines are map-based, meaning you have to click on an icon to see the house and details. I prefer to see a lot of listings at a glance and then "drill down" as desired ... but that's just me.

This website offers another map-driven approach to real estate search. As with most real estate search engines, you start the process by entering a city and state. After sitting through a map-zooming process that makes you feel like you're skydiving, you'll be asked for the usual follow-up parameters (price range, number of rooms, etc.). You can use Trulia's real estate search engine with or without an account, but if you sign up for a free account you'll be able to save your searches for future convenience. 1. Budget 2009 was presented before Parliament on 6-7-2009. The major changes in indirect taxes are summarised below:

2.1-No change in existing rate of service tax - Existing rate of service tax of 10 per cent continues unchanged.

2.2 -New services and expansion of some services - Four new services are proposed to be taxed. Coverage of some existing services is proposed to be altered/enhanced. The levy on new services and expanded services will be effective after Finance (No. 2) Act, 2009 receives assent of President and date is notified.

2.2-1- New Services

a.Transport of goods through rail.

b.Transport of coastal goods and goods transported through inland water.

c.Legal services of consultancy, advice or technical assistance (but not service of appearance before any court of law or any statutory authority). Service will be taxable only when provided by business entity like firms, associates, enterprises, companies, etc., but not individual.

d.Cosmetic and plastic surgery undertaken to preserve or enhance physical appearance or beauty.

2.2-2- Coverage Of Existing Services

a.Job work under Business Auxiliary Service (BAS) is exempt if there is manufacture'. Now, this exemption is available only if excisable goods' are manufactured. Thus, if alcoholic liquor is manufactured on job work basis, the exemption will not be available.

b.Sub-brokers have been exempted from tax. They will also not be liable under Business Auxiliary Service as commission agent.

c.The word acquiring' IT software is being changed with retrospective effect from 16-5-2008 to providing'

2.3- Service tax on transfer of right to use IT software - Packaged, i.e., branded (canned) software is excisable goods' under Heading 8523 80 20 [earlier 8524 91 11, 8524 91 12 and 8524 91 13]. The rate of excise duty is 12% w.e.f.
1-3-2008. Information Technology Software falls under Heading 8524 40 11 of Customs Tariff. Duty is free'. Thus, on import of software (branded or tailor-made), there is no customs duty. However, excise duty of 12% is payable on branded (packaged or canned) software. Hence, CVD was payable if packaged or canned software is imported.

The issue was whether both service tax and CVD/excise duty are payable on transfer of right to use software. It is now provided that service tax is payable and not CVD or excise duty [Notification Nos. 22/2009-CE and 80/2009-Cus dated 7-7-2009].

2.4 -Works contract composition scheme - So far, in case of works contract, if tax was paid under composition scheme at the rate of 4.12%, the value of material supplied free by customer was not required to be included. Now, this value will have to be included while calculating gross amount of works contract'. Further, if contract is split and some amount is shown as sale', that value will also be includible for purpose of calculating gross amount of works contract'.

2.5- Exemptions

a.Private bus operators providing point-to- point transportation of passengers having contract carriage permit' have been exempted from service tax.

b.Inter-bank transactions of sale and purchase of foreign currency when undertaken by scheduled banks has been exempted.

2.6- Services provided to installations, structures and vessels in continental shelf of India and the EEZ - Services provided to installations, structures and vessels in the continental shelf of India and the EEZ by person outside India will be Import of Service' and the person receiving the service will be liable to pay service tax under reverse charge method.

2.7 - Modifications in refund scheme of services utilised by exporters Scheme of refund of service tax on services utilised for exports has been modified. In case of GTA service and services of foreign commission agent (where service receiver is liable to pay service tax), the service tax is exempt [Notification No. 18/2009-ST, dated 7-7-2009].

In case of other services, the procedure has been simplified and (hopefully) refund will be obtained within one month on basis of self-certification or certification of CA [Notification No. 17/2009-ST, dated 7-7-2009].

2.8- Cenvat credit when exempt as well as taxable services provided - If both taxable and exempt services are provided, the assessee was required to pay 8% amount' under rule 6(3)(i) of the Cenvat Credit Rules w.e.f. 1-4-2008. Now, the amount' payable is 6% of value of exempted services w.e.f. 7-7-2009.

2.9- Duty rate - The general rate of excise duty continues to be 8% (Rate of service tax continues to be 10%). In case of many items, the duty rate which was 4% has been increased to 8%, except a few items.

In case of textile sector, the provision as applicable to manmade and natural textiles was disturbed when excise duty was reduced from 14% to 10% w.e.f. 7-12-2008 (and later to 8%) Now, duty regime as prevailing prior to 7-12-2008 has been restored.

3.0-Exemptions from duty

a.Branded jewellery has been fully exempted from excise duty (The duty rate was 2% till 6-7-2009).

b.Goods falling under Chapter 68 manufactured at the site of construction for use in construction work at the site have been exempted [Sl. No. 10 of Notification No. 5/2006-CE, dated 1-3-2006 amended w.e.f.

7-7-2009] (They had become liable to duty in view of amendment to definition of excisable goods' in section 2(d) of Central Excise Act amended w.e.f. 10-5-2008)
